Strength and Durability

Polycarbonate roof sheeting is high-impact resistant and can therefore withstand immense blunt-pressure. It can also endure extreme hot and cold temperatures without cracking or breaking, which makes it the optimal material to utilize for long-term weather resistance in the harsh South African climate.

The thickness of the material determines its strength and applications. MODEK manufactures three nominal thickness and strength specifications:

•    0.80mm – Is a light-weight PC for domestic household use (roofing; carports; patios and greenhouses) with a lifespan of 7-10 years
•    1.00mm – Is a relatively light-weight PC for light industrial and warehousing use (roofing and roof-lighting)
•    1.25mm – Is the standard for heavy industrial installation of roofing; sky-lighting and cladding.

Light and solar energy (heat) transmission

Polycarbonate roof sheeting is a translucent material that allows for the natural passage of light. The roof sheets come in a variety of colours because different applications that use translucent polycarbonate sheeting may need varying levels of light transmission.

One must be take careful consideration when choosing a colour polycarbonate roof sheeting, as the degree of natural (or visible) light and the degree of solar energy (heat) will vary accordingly. 

The range of colours includes:

  • Clear: Produces 10% light reflection; 90% transmission of light and has an 86% transmission of solar energy (heat).
  • White is offered in three shades:
    • Diffused Opal – Produces 82% light reflection; 70% light transmission and has a 79% transmission of solar energy.
    • Opal 50 – Produces 55% light reflection; 51% light transmission and has a 51% transmission of solar energy.
    • Opal 70 – Produces a 79% reflection light; 70% light transmission has a total solar transmission of 71%.
  • Blue: Produces a 28% reflection of light; 40% light transmission and has a 42% transmission of solar energy.
  • Green: Produces a 40% reflection of light; a 50% of transmission light and has a total transmission of 65% of solar energy.
  • Bronze: Produces a 7% reflection of light; a 50% transmission of light and has a 54% transmission of solar energy.
  • Heat Stop (Transparent silver): Produces a 32% reflection of light; a 22% transmission of light and has a 40% total transmission of solar energy.

UV Protection Polycarbonate roof sheeting

A film of high UV resistant material is manufactured and co-extruded (applied) with highly sophisticated technology to all MODEK polycarbonate roof sheeting. 

The long term UV Protection of polycarbonate roof sheeting is better than the UV protection in sunscreens. Natural light is wonderful for warming the home, but it can eventually erode even the hardiest material.  The protection offered by polycarbonate enhanced UV resistance can dramatically slow the erosion process.

PC roof sheeting is Flame retardant

Polycarbonate roof sheets meet the Fire Rating Requirements and have considerable heat resistant abilities. It is possible to further enhance this ability  with a variety of flame retardants without significantly lowering any of the other properties.

Resistant to a wide range of chemicals

Polycarbonate roof sheets resist corrosion and chemical attack in most industrial and marine environments. The chemical resistance depends on what type of chemical, detergent, cleaning agent or polish is used. 

Polycarbonate roof sheeting is resistant to mineral acids; many organic acids; neutral and acid salt solutions; oxidizing and reducing agents.

Polycarbonate roof sheeting may be installed on a variety of different structures which includes: wood; aluminium; other metals; etc. It is also suitable to be used with various glazing bar systems. 

However, in order to install PC roof sheeting, one must ensure that the polycarbonate profile matches the profile of your existing roof.
