How to Clean Polycarbonate Sheeting

Exposure to outdoor conditions will inevitably cause build-up of things such as dirt, dust, algae, leaves and twigs on your polycarbonate roofing.

If left unattended, these factors may cause erosion of the protective UV layer on the sheeting and may end up compromising the integrity of the sheeting. Therefore, it's important to clean your roof a few times a year.

Before starting with the cleaning process, be sure to remove all of the debris that has gathered on your roof. Do so by picking it up by hand, using a leaf blower or soft bristle broom to gently sweep it off.

The next step will be to rinse the sheeting with water to remove any loose debris which can cause scratching when you begin to wipe the sheets.

Additionally, it’s important to clean any gutters that are attached to the roof, as whatever you clean off the roof will likely run into your gutter. This will prevent unnecessary blockage in your gutters.

What to Use When Cleaning Your Polycarbonate Roof Panels

For light cleaning, you will need to use a soft sponge or a 100% cotton cloth and a lukewarm solution of water and dishwashing liquid.

Avoid using harsh, abrasive cleaning tools such as scourers, brushes or squeegees as well as chemical cleaning agents which are highly alkaline.

Cleaning Polycarbonate with Alcohol

When the dirt on your sheeting is more stubborn, you may need to use stronger cleaning agents such as butyl alcohol, methylated spirits or isopropyl alcohol which is also known as rubbing alcohol.

However, before using these agents, it’s advisable to first check the manufacturer’s specifications.

Additional Cleaning Tips

To ensure the best results, and to avoid causing damage to the protective UV coating, you may want to change the water in your bucket a few times during the clean.

Once you are done cleaning your roof panels, it’s important to thoroughly rinse the sheeting with cold water.

It’s equally important to manually dry your roof with a clean, soft towel to prevent water spots that result from airdrying.

Lastly, if you want to use a high-pressure cleaner when cleaning your polycarbonate roofing, be sure to stand at a reasonable distance from the roof to avoid causing damage to the protective UV coating.
